![]() ![]() Congress and the Biden administration have an opportunity with the American Families Plan to invest in the well-being of lower-income Americans permanently. ![]() The ARPA also includes a temporary expansion of the Child Tax Credit, which will provide up to $300 per child, per month in advance payments beginning in July.Īll of these initiatives create a real opportunity to see what investments in the well-being and food and economic security of every child can look like.īut again, ARPA is only temporary. Other anti-hunger policies, including a 15% boost to maximum SNAP household benefits, a boost to Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Fruits & Vegetables benefit, and child nutrition waivers like to-go meals for all children, were also temporarily extended. And though we don’t yet know details of Ohio’s plan for this program, the federal standard benefit will provide $375 per child to help families buy groceries during the summer months. Pandemic EBT benefits, authorized by Congress on a widely bipartisan basis more than a year ago, have been extended for summer 2021 for all Ohio children eligible for free and reduced-price school meals and non-student children under 6 years old in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households. Several of these steps particularly serve to prevent the unacceptably high rates of childhood food insecurity experienced earlier in the pandemic from reappearing. We are grateful for Congress and the Biden administration who took important steps in the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to address the widening income and wealth disparities driven by the pandemic. But for 1 in 6 Ohioans who are food insecure, the hard times continue. For many, this summer feels like freedom for the first time in a long time. We survived a tough 14 months, and all Ohioans are finally eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Summer is finally here, and most schools are out until the fall. ![]()
